Shut up, Social Media

Clarke used to spend every waking moment glued to his phone.

Watching Facebook videos. Playing online E-Sports.

If he wasn’t at work, he was on his phone.

In fact, the only time I ever recall him not being like this?

Was when he was in psychiatric hospital, and mobile phones weren’t around.

That is, until this summer.

When, one day, he put down his phone, and dived headfirst into life.

I have never seen anything like it.

Instead of seeing life through the eyes of a screen?

He just went for it. Totally immersed himself in a ton of different, real life things.

He got two new jobs. Completed his psychology degree. Did loads of jobs and manual labour around the house.

And it wasn’t just a phase. He’s been like that ever since:

Switched on. Totally engaged. Fully available.

I’ve got to tell you, I was well jealous.

So I decided to give it a whirl myself.

Let me tell you, I soon learned why it made him so damn happy and focussed!

My memory improved. I actually slept properly.

My brain wasn’t overwhelmed by hundreds of images and opinions bombarding me every single day.

I felt peaceful.

It was weird and good.

Around this time I also smashed up my phone so badly, it locked itself for 26,000,000 minutes.

Which is 43 years.

I didn’t really have the patience to wait that long. So I ordered a new one.

Being without my phone for a few days was honestly bloody amazing.

Except the day I set off for my local Tesco Superstore, but accidentally drove to Scotland.

I was quite grateful to get the map app back in my life after that.

Clarke didn’t even notice that I popped out for some bread, but mistakenly left the country, by the way.

He was too busy living his best, tech-free life.

I still don’t miss social media. Neither of us do.

But what I did realise, was something I had long forgotten:

I love blogs.

Both reading and writing them.

Always have.

As Social Media came along, the world of blogging suddenly seemed quite redundant.

But I’m taking it up again, now I have all of this free time that I don’t spend scrolling timelines anymore.

In retrospect I’ve struggled with Social Media and tech addiction, for years.

It was way trickier to break the habit than smoking or drinking was.

So, I decided to use the techniques I teach in my self help books, to break my own cycles of phone/social media/ tech addiction.

I really don’t know why it took me so long to thing of doing in the first place.

And now, of course, there is a book about it called Shut Up, Social Media! Where I teach the tools and discuss our journey to this point.

If you would like to read it, let me know!

I’d you are wondering why you are seeing this on social media, when I don’t use it anymore?

Then the long answer is on there.

The short answer is, there’s no way of contacting us on social media these days, as I will be doing everything through our website www.clarkeandcarrie.com

So if you have any questions, feel free to send them in our chat box!

I’m so looking forward to catching up with you all,

Carrie ❤️
